John Burton is named The Times Lawyer of the Week

John Burton has been named Lawyer of the Week by the Times following his successful representation of Samina Malik, the “Lyrical Terrorist”, in the Court of Appeal.

Samina Malik was the first woman convicted under Section 58 of the Terrorism Act 2000 for collecting information likely to be useful to those preparing for a terrorist act.  John argued that the conviction was unsafe on a number of grounds including that some of the documents left for the jury's consideration could not fall within the legislation and that her acquittal on Count 1 by the jury meant in the circumstances she could not be guilty of Count 2. The Crown eventually conceded the point and the conviction was quashed by the Court of Appeal on 17th June 2008.
