John Burton secures acquittal in child beating caseThe Prosecution alleged that Mr. L had severely beat his son in an argument over the theft of a £20 note. The beating was alleged to have been so severe that a handprint had been left on the boy's face which was visible for several days after the incident. After cross examining the boy, his mother and a Paediatrician called by the Prosecution, John Burton argued that the Prosecution evidence of how and when the injury was caused was so inconsistent that no properly directed jury could properly convict. The Learned Judge agreed and the jury were directed to acquit. 15 January 2010 |
