John Burton secures acquittal in attempted murder and wounding with intent case

The Prosecution alleged that Mr. W had assaulted his girlfriend Ms. E and told her to leave his flat. His girlfriend then contacted an x-boyfriend, Mr. S. and asked him to come and collect her. Mr. S and a friend of his, Mr. J then took a taxi to the address. There it was alleged by the Prosecution that Mr. W attacked Mr. J whilst he was seated in the taxi. The Prosecution claimed that Mr. S and Mr. J then caused some minor injuries to Mr. W in lawful self defence in an effort to restrain Mr. W. It was further alleged that Mr. W then returned to his flat in order to arm himself with a kitchen knife and conduct a revenge attack for the injuries he had sustained.

It was alleged by the Prosecution that Mr. W exited his flat brandishing a kitchen knife saying he was going to kill Mr. S. He chased Mr. S for 500 yards, caught up with him in the porch of another property that Mr. S was hiding in and then stabbed him 6 times in the back and once in the side, causing serious life threatening wounds, including a deflated lung. The Prosecution charged Mr W. with attempted murder and wounding with intent. Mr. W was acquitted of both charges by a jury after a two week trial at Hove Crown Court. He was convicted by the jury of a lesser charge of simple wounding, which was added to the indictment at the close of the Defence case.
