Stan Reiz concludes acid conspiracy to murder case
Stan Reiz led by Queen's Counsel has concluded the trial of Mohammed Vakas who was convicted of conspiracy to murder following a 4 week trial. Mr Vakas had already pleaded guilty to the lesser offence of conspiracy to cause grievous bodily harm. The Crown's case was that the defendant and two other defendants organised and carried out a vicious attack on Awais Akram during which he was stabbed and had sulphuric acid poured over him. An attempt was made to pour the acid into his mouth to force him to ingest it. The assault caused life threatening injuries.
The motivation for the attack was the alleged extra-marital relationship the victim was having with Sadia Khatoon; Mr Vakas' sister. The Crown alleged that Mr Vakas and two other defendants who were also convicted, conspired with Ms Khatoon and her husband Shakeel Abbasi to attack the victim in the early hours of the morning on the 2nd July 2009.
