John M. Burton QC persuades the Court of Appeal to reduce the sentence in a manslaughter conviction caseRubina Maroof was originally charged with the murder of Alfusaine Jabbi, an alleged "faith healer" in Luton in 2006. The Crown's case was that she had given him large sums of money which he would not return despite her making hundreds of calls to him. The Crown alleged that Rubina Maroof then arranged for a friend to lure him to Rubina Maroof's address where she and others were and there he was tortured and eventually killed. Rubina Maroof was represented at her trial by John M. Burton QC and was acquitted of murder but convicted of the lesser offences of manslaughter and conspiracy to falsely imprison. The Learned Judge sentenced her to 10 years imprisonment for the manslaughter with a 4 year concurrent sentence for the conspiracy to falsely imprison. John M. Burton QC advised and settled grounds of appeal against sentence and persuaded the Court of Appeal to reduce the sentence to a sentence of 8 years in total. 12 April 2011 |
