Anand Beharrylal

1997

Anand initially trained in Chancery chambers and later developed a criminal practice. This was based on recognition that clients often require several different types of service when facing legal difficulties. His civil practice includes General Common Law and Judicial Review. He is also qualified to undertake Direct Public Access work.

Anand's criminal practice is predominantly defence based, but he also prosecutes for the Crown Prosecution Service, Local Authorities and Executive Agencies with an emphasis on Fraud. Anand is instructed in cases ranging from Homicide, Sexual offences, Drugs offences (street supply to substantial importations) to White Collar crime which includes Money Laundering, Confiscation, Fraud (social security fraud to substantial VAT and Mortgage fraud) and Corruption in Public Office. His criminal practice encompasses providing advice and representation to criminal defence solicitors alleged to have been negligent or against whom wasted costs have been ordered.
In addition to being an experienced Crown Court practitioner, Anand has substantial experience providing advice and representation in the Court of Appeal (Criminal Division) and has appeared in several precedent setting cases e.g. R v Deyemi and Edwards [2007] EWCA Crim 2060; [2008] 1 Cr.App.R. 25; (2008) 172 J.P. 137; [2008] Crim LR 327.
Anand regularly undertakes criminal and civil work in Trinidad and Tobago, the latter of which includes Crime (including capital murder offences), Constitutional/Human Rights and general Chancery.

Anand also offers advice, drafting and advocacy services on appeals from Caribbean territories to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council. It is not uncommon for Anand to be instructed as sole counsel where the opposing side has retained both leading and junior counsel e.g. Lawrence v Poorah [2008] UKPC 21. In relation to Privy Council appellate work Anand often acts pro bono.

Anand is strongly committed to high quality training for the Bar and is both an approved Pupil Supervisor and Advocacy Tutor for Lincoln's Inn.

He is ranked as a legal expert in crime in the publication Legal Experts - Legal 500. See http://www.legalexpertsdirectory.com/
