Ian Boyes

2003

Ian Boyes is a natural Jury Advocate who appears for both the Prosecution and Defence at all levels.  In his Defence practice, which encompasses the large proportion of his practice, Ian has defended clients across the whole spectrum of offences including Arson, S.18 Assaults, Conspiracy to Supply and Rape.

Ian also maintains a very successful Niche Prosecution practice prosecuting large scale and high value Benefit Frauds for various London Boroughs, District Councils and City Councils. 

Ian has appeared as a led junior in a number of large scale historic sexual  offence cases and conspiracies to supply Class A drugs.

Inquests, Coroners’ Courts proceedings and Courts martials are other aspects of Ian’s work with which he has a genuine and tangible interest.

Aside from the above Ian is happy to give advice to Solicitors in writing or by telephone on any and all aspects of Criminal Law or Procedure.  Ian is also qualified to undertake work by way of Direct Access (please contact Michael Cross-1st Junior Clerk to discuss)

Ian also has experience of both appealing convictions and sentences before the Court of Appeal Criminal Division.

Recent cases

  •  R v W and M, Basildon Crown Court, successful Prosecution of £85000 Benefit Fraud which attracted significant National Press Interest

  • CPS v M & B Instructed for defendant trainee Solicitor indicted for taking a mobile phone into a prison on an official visit. Case has recently been heard in Court of Appeal on appeal from Crown Court following preparatory hearing. Judgment handed down in favour of defence on issue of mens rea. Case is now the guideline authority in this area. Citation at CPS v M and B [2010] 4 All E.R. 51, [2010] 2 Cr. App. R. 33

  • R v G, successful defence of alleged importer of 4Kg of Cocaine.

Forthcoming cases

  • R v P and others, defending in large scale Public Order incident which occurred after a football match

  • R v B, defending juvenile defendant for S.18 Assault after a cyclist was allegedly deliberately run over

  • R v S, defending alleged Handler of stolen car parts, case involves over 1000 allegedly stolen items of high value.

Interests/Activities

 I am currently researching aspects of International Criminal Law as part of my Doctoral studies.
